How it Works

How to Use the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Step 1: For your own post, tap "View insights" under it. You need a professional (business or creator) account to see insights. For someone else's post, use the likes and comments shown publicly.

Step 2: Enter likes, comments, saves, and shares. Saves and shares are only visible to the account owner, so leave them blank when you are checking another account.

Step 3: Choose "Followers" to compare accounts or vet a creator, or "Reach" to judge how your own content landed, then enter that number. Reach appears in insights as accounts reached.

Step 4: The rate appears as you type, with the arithmetic shown. Click "Copy result" to save it.

For an account-level rate, add up the interactions across the last 10 to 12 posts and divide by followers multiplied by the number of posts, or simply run each post and compare. One viral Reel can distort a small sample, so look at the median as well as the average.

Instagram Engagement Rate Formulas

  • By followers: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. The industry standard for comparing accounts and evaluating influencers, because it can be worked out from public numbers. When you only have public data, it becomes (likes + comments) ÷ followers.
  • By reach: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100. The better measure of content quality for your own account. It ignores followers who never saw the post and includes non-followers who did, which matters for Reels and anything that reaches the Explore page.

The two are not comparable. When someone quotes an Instagram engagement rate, ask which one it is. More on the underlying metrics in reach vs impressions.

Why Saves and Shares Matter

Likes are the cheapest interaction on Instagram. A save means someone wants to come back to the post, and a share means they sent it to another person, which is how posts reach new audiences. Instagram's leadership has repeatedly pointed to shares as one of the strongest signals for distribution. If you only count likes and comments on your own posts, you are leaving out the interactions that tell you the most.

What Is a Good Engagement Rate on Instagram?

It depends on the formula, the format, and above all the size of the account: rates by followers fall steadily as follower counts rise, so a small account and a large one should not be held to the same number. Reels, carousels, and single images also behave differently. Use your own trailing average as the main benchmark, and compare against accounts of a similar size in your category. Using Engagement Rate to Vet Influencers

  • Calculate it yourself from the last 10 or more posts rather than trusting a media kit.
  • Look for consistency. A steady rate across posts is a better sign than one spike surrounded by low numbers.
  • Read the comments. A healthy rate made of one-word comments and emoji from unrelated accounts is a warning sign.
  • Ask for reach and saves. A creator can screenshot insights. The rate by reach tells you more than the rate by followers.

How to Improve Your Instagram Engagement Rate

Make posts worth saving: checklists, frameworks, and reference material earn saves in a way announcements do not. Use Stories to start conversations, with Story ideas that drive engagement. Borrow reach with collab posts. And publish when your audience is active: here is the best time to post on Instagram. Measuring another network? Use the general Engagement Rate Calculator or the TikTok version.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add up likes, comments, saves, and shares, divide by followers (or by reach), and multiply by 100. For example, 1,179 interactions on an account with 18,000 followers is an Instagram engagement rate of 6.55%.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on the account's size, the format, and which formula you use. Rates by followers decline as accounts grow, so compare against your own average and against accounts of a similar size rather than a single universal number.

Should saves and shares count toward Instagram engagement rate?

Yes, when you have them. Saves and shares are stronger signals of value than likes. They are only visible to the account owner, so when you calculate the rate for someone else's account, use likes and comments only and compare like with like.

Can I calculate the engagement rate of an account I do not own?

Yes. Use the followers option and enter the likes and comments shown publicly on their posts, along with their follower count. Saves, shares, and reach are private, so the result is slightly lower than the account's true rate.

What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by reach?

Engagement rate by followers divides interactions by your follower count and is best for comparing accounts. Engagement rate by reach divides by the unique accounts that saw the post and is best for judging content quality. The numbers are not interchangeable.

Is the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free, needs no account or Instagram login, and runs entirely in your browser. The numbers you enter are not sent anywhere.
