How it Works
How to Use the YouTube Engagement Rate Calculator
Step 1: Open the video. Likes, comments, and views are public, so this works for any video, not only your own.
Step 2: Enter likes and comments. If it is your video and you want shares included, add the Shares metric in YouTube Studio's advanced analytics and enter that too. Otherwise leave it blank.
Step 3: Enter the video's views.
Step 4: The rate appears as you type, with the arithmetic shown. Click "Copy result" to save it.
The YouTube Engagement Rate Formula
(likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. YouTube engagement is measured against views rather than subscribers, because most views on most channels come from search, suggested videos, and the home feed, not from the subscriptions tab. A channel's subscriber count says little about how many people saw a given video.
Dislikes are left out. The public dislike count was removed in 2021, so it cannot be applied consistently across videos you do not own, and a dislike is not the kind of response this metric is meant to capture.
What Is a Good Engagement Rate on YouTube?
Expect a lower number than on other networks. Watching a video is the main thing people do on YouTube, and most never touch the like button, so rates by views in the low single digits are normal. Rates vary with topic and format: tutorials people search for tend to earn fewer comments than opinion or community content, and Shorts behave differently from long-form video. Compare each video against your channel's own median and against similar videos in your niche, not against Instagram or TikTok.
Engagement Rate Is Not YouTube's Main Signal
YouTube has been open that its recommendations are built around viewer satisfaction, which it reads mostly from watch behavior: whether people click, how long they stay, and whether they keep watching afterwards. Likes and comments are part of the picture but a small part. Treat engagement rate as a measure of how strongly viewers felt, and read it next to click-through rate and average view duration in YouTube Studio. A video with an ordinary engagement rate and strong retention is doing its job.
When Engagement Rate Is Useful on YouTube
- Comparing videos of different sizes. Raw like counts favor whatever got the most views. The rate shows which topics moved people.
- Vetting creators for sponsorships. It works on public data, and a channel with high views but almost no interaction deserves a closer look.
- Spotting community content. Videos with unusually high comment rates show you what your audience wants to talk about, which is a good brief for the next video.
How to Improve Your YouTube Engagement Rate
- Ask one specific question in the video and pin it as the top comment. Reply to early comments in the first day.
- Make the promise clear before the click. Viewers who got what the title promised are the ones who like the video. Draft options with the YouTube Title Generator.
- Use the description to keep people going, with chapters and links to the next video. The YouTube Description Generator writes a first draft.
- For Shorts, timing matters more. See the best time to post on YouTube Shorts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate engagement rate on YouTube?
Add up likes, comments, and shares, divide by the video's views, and multiply by 100. For example, 2,335 interactions on 48,000 views is a YouTube engagement rate of 4.86%.
What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?
Lower than on most social networks, because most viewers watch without liking or commenting. Low single digits by views is normal. Compare a video against your own channel's median and against similar videos in your niche.
Should YouTube engagement rate be based on views or subscribers?
Views. Most YouTube views come from search, suggested videos, and the home feed rather than from subscribers, so subscriber count is a poor guide to how many people saw a video.
Can I calculate the engagement rate for someone else's YouTube video?
Yes. Likes, comments, and views are public on every video, so you can work out the rate for any channel. Shares are only available to the channel owner, so leave that field blank.
Does engagement rate affect the YouTube algorithm?
Somewhat. YouTube says its recommendations focus on viewer satisfaction, which it reads mainly from watch behavior such as click-through rate and how long people keep watching. Likes and comments contribute, but retention matters more.
Is the YouTube Engagement Rate Calculator free?
Yes. The calculator is free, needs no account or YouTube login, and runs entirely in your browser. The numbers you enter are not sent anywhere.
