How it Works
How to Use the LinkedIn Summary Generator
Step 1: Describe your role and what you do. Two or three plain sentences is enough: your title, the kind of company, what you are responsible for.
Step 2: Add results, experience, or proof if you have it: numbers you moved, things you built, where you worked before. This is optional, but it is what makes a summary credible.
Step 3: Say who the summary should speak to, then pick a goal (get hired, win clients, build authority, or network) and a tone.
Step 4: Click "Generate summaries." You get three About sections in different styles. Copy the one closest to your voice and edit it until it sounds like you.
The generator writes only from what you give it. It will not invent an employer, a number, or an award. Where a summary needs a detail you did not provide, it leaves a [placeholder] in brackets. Fill those in or delete them before you publish.
What the LinkedIn About Section Is For
Your headline gets someone to click your profile. Your About section is where they decide whether to message you, follow you, or move on. It is the one place on the profile where you speak in your own voice, in full sentences, instead of in job titles and dates. Recruiters read it to understand what you want. Buyers read it to see whether you understand their problem. LinkedIn's search reads it for keywords.
What Makes a Good LinkedIn Summary
- An opening that survives the cut. Only the first three lines or so show before "…see more." Those lines should say who you help and how. Save your origin story for paragraph two.
- First person. "I help" reads like a person. "Jane is a seasoned professional" reads like a conference bio.
- Specifics over adjectives. "Tripled qualified pipeline in 18 months" does more than "results-driven marketing leader."
- Written for one reader. A summary aimed at hiring managers and a summary aimed at clients are different documents. Pick the reader your goal depends on.
- The words people search for. Include your actual job function, industry, and skills in natural sentences.
- Short paragraphs. Two or three sentences each, with blank lines between them. Most profiles are read on a phone.
- One clear next step. Tell people what to contact you about and how.
How Long Should a LinkedIn Summary Be?
LinkedIn allows 2,600 characters, around 400 words. You rarely need them. Somewhere between 120 and 250 words is enough to cover who you help, how, your proof, and a call to action, and it is short enough that people finish it. The summaries from this tool land in that range. If you have more to say, the Experience and Featured sections are the place for it.
LinkedIn Summary Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving it blank. An empty About section is the most common mistake and the easiest to fix.
- Pasting your resume. The Experience section already lists your jobs. The summary explains what they add up to.
- Opening with your years of experience. It is the most common first line on LinkedIn, which is the reason not to use it.
- Buzzword chains. "Passionate, dynamic, results-oriented" could describe anyone, so it describes no one.
- No contact route. If someone finishes your summary convinced, make the next step obvious.
The Rest of Your Profile
The summary works with the line above it. Write that with the LinkedIn Headline Generator. Founders should read our guide to LinkedIn profile optimization for founders. A finished profile earns more from every post, so when you are ready to publish, draft with the LinkedIn Post Generator and check the opening lines in the LinkedIn Post Preview Tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a LinkedIn summary generator?
A LinkedIn summary generator is a free tool that writes the About section of your LinkedIn profile. You describe your role, your results, and your goal, and it returns several first-person summaries in different styles.
What should I write in my LinkedIn About section?
Say who you help and how in the first two sentences, back it up with specific results or experience, write in the first person, and end with what people should contact you about. Include the job function and skills people would search for.
How long should a LinkedIn summary be?
LinkedIn allows up to 2,600 characters, but 120 to 250 words is usually enough. Only about the first three lines show before "…see more," so the opening matters more than the length.
Should a LinkedIn summary be in first or third person?
First person. "I help B2B teams…" sounds like a person and is how most strong profiles are written. Third person reads like a press bio and creates distance.
Will the generator make up facts about me?
No. It uses only the details you provide. If a summary needs a specific you did not give, such as a result or a contact method, it leaves a bracketed placeholder for you to fill in or remove.
Is the LinkedIn Summary Generator free?
Yes. The LinkedIn Summary Generator is free to use and does not require an account or a LinkedIn login.
