How X Counts Characters

X does not count the way a word processor does, which is why a post that looks fine in your notes app gets rejected. The rules that matter:

• Letters, numbers, spaces, and common punctuation count as 1. A line break counts as 1 too.
• Every link counts as 23, no matter how long or short it is, because X wraps all links in its t.co shortener. A 90-character URL costs 23. So does a 12-character one.
• Every emoji counts as 2, including ones built from several parts, such as flags, skin tones, and family emoji.
• Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as 2, so the effective limit in those languages is 140.
• Images, videos, GIFs, and polls count as 0. So does a quoted post.
• In a reply, the @usernames X adds at the start count as 0. A @mention you type inside the text counts in full.

This counter applies the first four automatically. The last two depend on what you attach or reply to, so they never appear in your text in the first place.

When to Cut and When to Thread

If you are 10 or 20 characters over, cut. Tight posts read better, and the usual suspects are easy to find: "I think," "just," "really," a second adjective, a closing line that repeats the opening. If you are well over, you have more than one idea, and a thread will serve it better than a butchered single post.
